A joyride for a 29-year-old Sydney man went horribly wrong last night when he hit a telegraph pole and flipped six times while travelling at speeds of up to 172kmh, with police saying he "should have been dead" after the accident.

Police said they spotted a silver Toyota Soarer travelling at speeds of up to 172 kmh along the M4 Motorway in Eastern Creek about 8.45pm. The speed limit on the road is 100kmh.

They conducted a three to four-minute car chase after they were unsuccessful in attempting to stop the car.

A Mount Druitt Highway Patrol car pursued it along the motorway then onto Roper and Erskine Park Roads at St Claire.

The vehicle avoided traffic and was travelling at speeds of up to 150kmh in 60 and 70kmh zones, police said.

"If someone would have pulled out it would have been a bit ugly," said Senior Constable Jo-Anne Clinch.

The driver of the Soarer lost control and crashed into a telegraph pole on Lenore Lane in Erskine Park, causing the car to role six times.

Police were not sure exactly how fast the car was travelling when it hit the pole in the industrial area strip.

"It definitely wasn't a slow collision," Senior Constable Clinch said.

"He should have been dead. The police thought he was dead, we've seen crashes of much less calibre and people have died."
