JOEY DE MESA spent two days in and out of holding cells - interrogated by police, denied bail, charged with stalking and assaulting six girls.

He was splashed across the weekend news as the buck-toothed rapist haunting western Sydney, but by Monday night was released after police admitted he was not their man.

"I just didn't know what to do. I was in terrible shock," Mr de Mesa said of being arrested and charged with the 11 offences, despite having taken himself to a police station to explain he was the man in security footage shown on television. "They treated me as guilty. They all believed that it was me."

Last night the detective heading the operation, John Kerlatec, said he would make the same decision if confronted again with the evidence on which he had charged Mr de Mesa. The case, he said, was being handled by investigators whose recent successes included the conviction of Lauren Huxley's attacker.

"I would have no doubt that any investigator would do the same thing. Without the forensics you would be 100 per cent confident the right person was arrested and charged - that's how emphatic and compelling the evidence was," he said.

Police cannot say what "compelling evidence" they found at Mr de Mesa's Minchinbury home - evidence that led him to be charged amid fears he posed a serious risk to the community.
