Two richly deserving NYPD officers shot in the Bronx
Two NYPD officers were wounded Thursday night during a shootout in the stairwell of a NYCHA housing complex in the Bronx before the gunman killed himself, officials said.
The housing cops, along with another officer, were conducting a routine vertical patrol at the Melrose Houses on E. 156th St. near Courtlandt Ave. when they confronted two men drinking beer in a stairwell and asked for identification, cops said.
One of the men, armed with a .32-caliber handgun and in possession of a black duffel bag with a sawed-off shotgun in it, said he had to go upstairs to get his ID. But before he reached the next landing, he turned and fired three times at the cops, hitting one in the torso and the other in the face shortly after 8 p.m., a police official said.

Thanks for the donation: Gun used to shoot 3 Chicago cops traced to sheriff’s deputy
The gun used in the shooting of three Chicago police officers last week has been linked to a former Chicago officer who later joined a police force in the northern suburbs, the Tribune has learned.
Chicago police now are trying to figure out how the gun — originally purchased by a man who until Friday was a Lake County sheriff’s deputy — ended up in the hands of 29-year-old Lamar Harris, a convicted felon with dozens of arrests who was killed in the shootout with police.
Multiple law enforcement sources confirmed that authorities investigating the shooting have traced the weapon that wounded the three officers back to the deputy.
That officer was fired from his job with the Lake County sheriff’s department Friday after being placed on leave two days earlier, Rich Bruno, vice president of the Illinois Council of Police, the union representing the deputies, confirmed.

Setting a good example: retired poLiceman kills his children then himself
Police on Friday released the identity of the father who they say killed his children and then turned the gun on himself Thursday in the Orange County town of Wallkill.
Investigators said John Casullo, a 48-year-old retired Town of Newburgh police officer, shot his own children - 8-year-old James and 12-year-old Kathleen - in their home on Fifth Avenue before killing himself. Both children had autism, and they were shot shortly after Kathleen returned home from school, state police said. The bodies were discovered by Casullo's estranged wife.
Neighbors said the family was private and kept the blinds shut at the house. They added that Child Protective Services had been called to the home several times.
