| Cool: Deputy US marshal killed in fugitive shootout
A deputy U.S. marshal was killed Tuesday in a shootout on the outskirts of Baton Rouge while trying to arrest a fugitive wanted in the slayings of a brother and sister, officials said.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells was killed about 11 a.m., said Drew Wade, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service. Wells was 27 and assigned to a Marshals office in Mississippi.
The last time a deputy marshal was killed in the line of duty in the U.S. was in March 2011.
Wade said the fugitive, Jamie D. Croom, 31, was shot and taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

| Heroic & Superb Marksmanship: 2 cops shot outside Ferguson poLICE headquarters, one got it in the face - YaY!
FERGUSON, Mo. -- Two officers were shot outside the Ferguson, Missouri police headquarters early Thursday, authorities said, as demonstrators gathered following the resignation of the city's embattled police chief in the wake of a scathing Justice Department report alleging bias in the police department and court.
A 32-year-old officer from nearby Webster Groves was shot in the face and a 41-year-old officer from St. Louis County was shot in the shoulder, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said at a news conference.
Both were taken to a hospital where, Belmar said, they were conscious. He said he did not have further details about their conditions but described their injuries as "serious."
"I don't know who did the shooting, to be honest with you," Belmar said, adding that he could not provide a description of the suspect or gun.
He said his "assumption" was that, based on where the officers were standing and the trajectory of the bullets, "these shots were directed exactly at my officers."
Police sources were calling the gunfire an "ambush" and said whoever fired the shots was at large, CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOV-TV reported.
The station says the two victims were standing next to each other, working crowd control.
On Wednesday, Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III announced the city had reached a mutual separation agreement with Jackson that will pay Jackson one year of his nearly $96,000 annual salary and health coverage. Jackson's resignation becomes effective March 19.
Jackson was the sixth employee to resign or be fired since the Justice Department report last week cleared Wilson of federal civil rights charges in the Brown shooting. Wilson has since resigned. A separate Justice Department report found a profit-driven court system and widespread racial bias in the city police department.
Jackson had previously resisted calls by protesters and some of Missouri's top elected leaders to step down over his handling of Brown's shooting and the weeks of protests that followed. He was widely criticized from the outset, both for an aggressive police response to protesters and for his agency's erratic and infrequent releases of key information.
He took nearly a week to publicly identify Wilson as the shooter and then further heightened tension in the community by releasing Wilson's name at the same time as store security video that police said showed Brown stealing a box of cigars and shoving a clerk only a short time before his death.
During a 12-minute news conference, Knowles said Jackson resigned after "a lot of soul-searching" about how the community could heal from the racial unrest stemming from the fatal shooting last summer.
"The chief is the kind of honorable man you don't have to go to," Knowles said. "He comes to you when he knows that this is something we have to seriously discuss."
The acting head of the Justice Department's civil rights division released a statement saying the U.S. government remains committed to reaching a "court-enforceable agreement" to address Ferguson's "unconstitutional practices," regardless of who's in charge of the city.
A U.S. law enforcement official said Wednesday the Justice Department had not pressured or encouraged Jackson to resign during meetings with him but had also not resisted the idea. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing meetings between the Justice Department and the police department.
The resignation was welcomed by state lawmakers who represent Ferguson.
"There would be a lot of people that would approve of that," said Democratic state Rep. Sharon Pace, who represents the neighborhood where Brown was shot.
Jackson oversaw the Ferguson force for nearly five years before the shooting that stirred months of unrest across the St. Louis region and drew global attention to the predominantly black city of 21,000.
In addition to Jackson, Ferguson's court. clerk was fired last week and two police officers resigned. The judge who oversaw the court system also resigned, and the City Council on Tuesday agreed to a separation agreement with the city manager.

LINDEN, N.J. (AP) — Police are investigating whether alcohol use explains how a car carrying three off-duty New Jersey police officers from a visit to a strip club drove the wrong way down a New York City highway and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer, killing an officer and a civilian and critically injuring two other policemen.

| Cop Tries To Shoot Dog, Misses and Hits PoLICE Sergeant Instead
We have all heard a lot of unfortunately stories lately about police officers shooting “man’s best friend.” But now, a police officer who was aiming at a dog missed the canine and accidentally shot his sergeant instead!
A pit bull inside of a Brooklyn apartment building was reportedly “charging” the officer, but had not attacked him, according to local WABC.

| Intelligent enough to rightfully hate pigs, shoots deserving cop in statist leg
SLIDELL, La. (AP) - A man with a history of confronting police is accused of shooting an officer who answered a bar’s call for help, according to Slidell police.
Jeremy Lackey, 28, was held Saturday on three counts of attempted murder of a police officer and one of illegal use of a weapon, and Sgt. Cliff Laigast is recovering at home from a bullet wound in his leg, Detective Daniel Seuzeneau said Saturday.
It was not clear whether Lackey has an attorney who could comment.
Police were called Friday night to a bar where witnesses said Lackey was drunk, belligerent and trying to pick fights, Seuzeneau said.
He said Lackey’s friends were escorting him out of the bar when police arrived, but he pushed away, got a gun from his motorcycle, and fired about 10 shots at police.
“The officers positioned themselves between innocent bystanders and the shooter, and returned fire” as Lackey headed toward crowded businesses, Seuzeneau wrote in a news release. He said that after Laigast was shot, a K-9 officer released his dog, which got to Lackey before he could shoot again.
After the shooting, he said, investigators found social media posts that Lackey allegedly had made about three hours earlier, “indicating that he was purposely going out to make ‘bad decisions.’”
About five months ago, Lackey barricaded himself in his apartment with a gun and bulletproof armor, but was arrested without injury.
“Mr. Lackey was an angry individual who desired conflict with law enforcement. There have been several documented incidents where Mr. Lackey has challenged and became confrontational with law enforcement across the nation; spanning from California to Louisiana,” Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith said. “His intention last night was to kill several of my officers.”

| LOL, South Carolina pig barricades himself in home, commits suicide during armed standoff
An armed Charleston, South Carolina police officer took his own life after barricading himself in his home following a domestic dispute. Sergeant George Hildebidle “decided to end his life his own way,” Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen told reporters, but would not comment on the cause of death. There were two dogs in the house that made the process of confirming the officer’s death difficult, Charleston County Sheriff J. Al Cannon Jr. said. The Charleston County coroner arrived on the scene around 12:50 p.m. ET after law enforcement began leaving the scene in droves, WCSC reporter Hannah Moseley tweeted. - Quote :

— Stacy Jacobson (@StacyJacobsonTV) April 9, 2015 Law enforcement began arriving at the scene after receiving the initial phone call at 7:53 a.m., surrounding the home. More than 50 police officers, including Sheriff's Office Negotiators and a SWAT team, were at the scene. The officer was alone inside the home and refusing to come out. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office tried to contact him via phone and PA, however had not made contact, WCBD reported. Neighbors in the Autumn Chase subdivision were initially put on lockdown, but have since been evacuated, deputies told WCSC. - Quote :

| That's the statist spirit: Former Texas police chief found dead ahead of trial
WEST COLUMBIA, Texas (AP) - A former suburban Houston police chief has been found dead days before he was to stand trial for sexual assault of a minor.
The Houston Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1IBlriG ) that Michael Palmer was found unresponsive Thursday in the back yard of his home in West Columbia, about 50 miles southwest of Houston.
The Galveston County medical examiner’s office will perform the autopsy.
Police say a trial was scheduled to begin next week for Palmer over allegations that he sexually assaulted a minor.
Palmer briefly disappeared after he was indicted in 2013 but returned several weeks later.

| Way To Go: poLICE officer shot in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia bicycle officer was shot and wounded Thursday night in west Philadelphia by a drug suspect who told him "I don't want to have to do this," before firing at him, police said.
Authorities said Officer Daniel Kostick and his partner approached a man inside a van around 10:15 p.m. after suspecting a possible narcotics violation. The man backed up and sped off, police said.
Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross said when Kostick caught up with the suspect a few blocks away, the man said to him: "I don't want to have to do this," and then began shooting. He said Kostick returned fire, striking the suspect.
Kostick, an 8-year department veteran, suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, where he is in stable condition. The suspect was admitted to Hahnemann University Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
A weapon was recovered.
Ross said Kostick, who is married and has two children, is "OK. ... He's in good spirits." He said the department "is thankful for that."
In March, Officer Robert Wilson III was shot and killed during a video game store robbery.
