Excellent: Trooper ambush suspect plotted for years
FBI along with various state police officers exit a wooded area at Buck Hill Falls in Barrett Township, Pa., where the search for Eric Frein continues Friday Sept 26, 2014. Frein is suspected of fatally shooting a state trooper and wounding another at the Blooming Grove state police barracks two weeks ago.
Police say the hard drive of a computer used by the suspect in the deadly ambush of Pennsylvania state police troopers provides evidence he has been planning an attack for years and preparing to avoid arrest.
State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said a police inspection of the hard drive shows Eric Frein did Internet research on how to avoid police manhunts and on law enforcement technology and survival skills.
Bivens said Frein might now be treating the dragnet in northeastern Pennsylvania as "a game — a war game, if you will."
Authorities believe they have Frein contained within a 5-square-mile perimeter around his parents' home in Canadensis. They provided new details Friday, two weeks after a gunman opened fire at the state police barracks in Blooming Grove, killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson and injuring a second trooper who remains hospitalized.
Frein has managed to elude hundreds of law enforcement officials looking for him in the thick woods around his parents' home in Canadensis, taking advantage of the difficult terrain to keep them at bay. He is believed to be armed with at least one high-powered rifle.
"I suspect he wants to have a fight with the state police, but I think that involves hiding and running since that seems to be the way he operates," Bivens said. "I expect that he'll be hiding and try to take a shot from some distance from a place of concealment, as he has done in the past."
Underscoring the danger they face as they pursue him, Bivens said Frein had experimented with explosives, citing materials that police found and interviews with people who knew him. Trackers are proceeding through the thick woods as though they are booby-trapped, he said. Police think Frein might have a radio.
A police dog picked up Frein's scent several days ago and flushed him from his hiding place. But the distance was too great, and Frein was able to get away, the dense canopy providing cover from a police helicopter overhead, Bivens said Friday.
As the search for the gunman neared its third week, Bivens said he remains confident police will catch their man — "at some point."

After all, we need crash-test dummies: Ridgefield Park poLICE officer dragged by minivan at checkpoint
A Ridgefield Park police officer was dragged by a minivan as he tried to perform a traffic stop at checkpoint.
It ended in a crescendo of shattered glass and screeching metal, a stolen minivan that tried to escape a police checkpoint and ended up dragging a police officer nearly 75 feet along Grand Avenue in Palisades Park.
Valerie Georgiou was having dinner when she saw a police car speed by.
"Then we see Leonia Police, then we saw Ridgefield Police, State Police, Bergen Police, and I was like, what's going on, and so I walked outside, and I saw them at the bottom of my block," Georgiou said.
The pursuit started over on Broad Avenue, and the stolen minivan driving so recklessly that the mother in an SUV had to swerve to avoid him. Janet Cava was right behind the stolen car and saw the SUV try to get out of the way.
"She tried to avoid getting into the accident with him, so she winded up on the sidewalk and into the building. It sounded as if it was a big explosion, there was a lot of smoke, everyone was running," Cava said.
"One minute I heard the loud bang and the next minute you heard a second bang, and the whole building just shook. That's when I looked out my window, and I looked down, and I saw the car against the side of the building," said Wanda Vasquez, a resident.
A mother and her 4-year-old son were in the SUV, neither seriously hurt, but the person driving the stolen minivan kept going, according to sources ramming through a police checkpoint, and dragging a Ridgefield Park police officer.
"Just at a high speed, just going really, really fast down the hill, so it looked like he was going to tip over, he was just going so fast, absolutely reckless," Cava said.
The suspect tried to run but was arrested at the scene. He has not been charged officially yet.
The officer who was dragged suffered a broken arm and another officer suffered minor injuries.

WHOA! Open Season On Pigs: poLICE in 3 Washington towns targeted by gunfire - Let The Revolution Begin
A day after dozens of gunshots were directed at police in three Snohomish County towns, law enforcement officials said little about what prompted the rampage.
They did say they were thankful no one was killed.
After two Marysville police officers fired their guns Wednesday night, police said a 43-year-old Granite Falls man surrendered and was taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries. Both officers have been placed on leave; neither was hurt.
Police likely won't discuss a possible motive until the man is charged, Snohomish County sheriff's spokeswoman Shari Ireton said Thursday.
Once discharged from the hospital, he's expected to be booked into jail for investigation of two counts of first-degree assault with a firearm and three counts of drive-by shooting, she said.
A Marysville police sergeant was also injured. The Daily Herald of Everett identified him as Sgt. James Maples. The 19-year veteran was treated at an Everett hospital and released. The nature of his injury was not clear.
The hour-long shooting spree in the towns of Granite Falls, Lake Stevens and Marysville generated approximately 30 "shots fired" calls to police dispatchers, Ireton said. The area is about 30 miles northeast of Seattle.
Bullets hit the Granite Falls police station and a patrol car about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, the sheriff's office said. Several rounds went into the building. The car had the windows shot out.
A half-hour later, shots were fired at the Lake Stevens Police Department. A patrol car and animal-control vehicle as well as the building and reader board outside were hit, the sheriff's office said.
No one was hurt at either station.
Witnesses had reported a suspicious white pickup truck that officers spotted about 10:10 p.m. in Marysville. The suspect stopped or slowed and fired twice before finally stopping and firing more shots.
He finally obeyed command to get out of the vehicle. Officers found several guns in and near the truck, the sheriff's office said.
Granite Falls Police Chief David Bowman was also injured when he suffered an apparent medical issue and crashed his pickup into a concrete barrier on Interstate 5 while responding to the gunfire, the Washington State Patrol said.
He was taken to a Mount Vernon hospital and later transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, The Seattle Times reported.
The gunfire alarmed Marysville residents.
Mackenzie Harris, 17, of Marysville, told KOMO-TV that she and a friend saw officers pull over a pickup truck. The truck driver then pulled out a gun and started shooting.
"We heard gunshots, so we ran inside," she said. "While we were running up to my room, we heard, like, two dozen more shots being fired. We walked back down stairs and heard cops screaming and a bunch of yelling."
Annie Fitzgerald and Chris Tracey were playing video games in their second-floor apartment when they heard gunfire.
"We heard pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, like 10 shots" maybe more, Fitzgerald told The Daily Herald.
"There was definitely gunfire going both directions," Tracey said.

Criminal Family Values: Calif. sheriff deputy killed in line of duty 26 years to the day his cop father died while on job
The line of duty killing of a Northern California deputy sheriff Friday occurred 26 years to the day his deputy sheriff father died in the line of duty when his helicopter crashed during a pursuit of drug smugglers.
Michael Davis Jr., 42, of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office was 16 when his father was killed on Oct. 24, 1988. Davis followed Michael Davis Sr. into law enforcement when he got older.
Davis was shot to death Friday morning when a 34-year old man went on a shooting rampage in the Sacramento area. Authorities said the gunman also killed a Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy and wounded two others, Davis’ partner and a 38-year-old Sacramento civilian.
“I looked at my calendar and said, ‘Oh, God,’” Rick Kotholow, a retired Riverside County deputy sheriff told the Riverside Press-Enterprise.
Kothlow told the paper he worked with the elder Davis in Riverside and it was he who knocked on the door to tell Davis’ wife of the helicopter crash. He said Davis Jr. was the one who opened the door.
The helicopter was carrying Davis’ 34-year-old father, four other deputy sheriffs and three National Guardsmen as part of Operation Border Ranger, a joint drug smuggling interdiction operation near the Mexico border. The chopper snagged on a power line and exploded in a hillside, according to the website of the California Peace Officers Memorial Foundation.
The suspect , described as a "one-man crime spree," Marcelo Marques of Salt Lake City eluded hundreds of searchers before being hunted down and forced to surrender, authorities said.

Even better: Two Amherst poLICE officers hurt while making arrest
Two Amherst police officers were injured while trying to arrest a shoplifting suspect around 9:45 p.m. Saturday.
Amherst Police tell us they responded to a call of a larceny in progress at the Walmart on Sheridan Drive. Witnesses pointed out who the suspect was and one of the officers chased him to his pick-up truck, where they got into a struggle.
The suspect was able to get into the pick-up truck and drive off, while the officer was holding onto his steering wheel. The pick-up dragged him some distance, police say.
The other officer, fearing that his partner's life was in danger, started firing at the vehicle. The officer being dragged by the pick-up managed to disentangle himself and the suspect sped off.
While all this was going on, another Amherst police officer on foot was hit by a patrol car arriving at the scene to assist in the arrest. He was seriously injured.
