ASYLUM seekers in the country's newest immigration detention centre face a cold Tasmanian winter in barracks, but a warmer welcome from key state leaders.

The ''Tasmanian solution'' to overcrowding in other centres will be developed at an army shooting range near Pontville, 20 kilometres north of Hobart, on a plain notorious for winter winds.

A dozen wooden army buildings, described by the Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen, as appropriate infrastructure, form the nucleus of the centre to house up to 400 single adult men.

The facility will undergo a $15 million upgrade to bring it into line with those on the mainland, Mr Bowen said.

The actual barracks at Pontville were trucked in to the range from a Defence post at Brighton, where they were used to house Kosovar refugees in 1999.
