Sweet: St. Pete officer injured in crash with taxi
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a St. Petersburg police officer was hospitalized following a crash with a taxi.
Police say the officer and the cab driver had been approaching an intersection from opposite directions shortly after midnight Thursday when the taxi made a left turn in front of the officer, leading to a collision. The impact sent the patrol car into a utility box and pole.
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital. His injuries weren’t considered life-threatening.
The taxi driver was not injured. He was cited with failing to yield while making a left turn.

A Nebraska man opened fire on officers who were trying to arrest him for a previous shooting, prompting police to return gunfire in a shootout that left one officer and the suspect dead, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said.
Officer Kerrie Orozco, 29, died at Creighton University Medical Centre shortly after the 1pm shooting, Schmaderer said at a news conference. Schmaderer said the suspect, 26-year-old Marcus Wheeler, also died at the hospital.

A New Orleans police officer was found shot dead in his marked patrol car this morning, city officials said.
The shooting was reported around 7 a.m., the New Orleans Police Department said in a news release. The victim's car rolled forward and struck a curb after the shooting.

POTTSVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania State Police say a 30-year-old man has been arrested on charges stemming from a crash Thursday that left him and two troopers injured and a state police vehicle totaled. Police say Brad Moyer was released from a hospital and taken into custody Saturday on charges including criminal attempt homicide. He was arraigned and ordered held without bail. The Schuylkill County Prison had no information Saturday on whether Moyer has a lawyer. Police say troopers were responding to a domestic incident when they spotted the suspect after he had driven off from the house, and they followed him. Police say he aimed his car at the troopers’ SUV, accelerated to 91 mph and hit the SUV, which then hit a tree. Both troopers were treated at a hospital and released.

Crashed into state police cruiser, injured trooper
EASTON, Mass. (AP) - A 26-year-old man has been charged with operating under the influence of alcohol after authorities say he crashed into a state police cruiser in Easton. State police say the marked cruiser was stopped at a traffic light Monday night when it was rear-ended by a car driven by 26-year-old Luke Anderson. The trooper was injured in the crash, and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
NEW YORK (AP) - Five New York City police officers are being treated for injuries after two police cruisers collided in the Bronx.
Police say the crash happened Sunday night as the officers were responding to a call.
Police say three officers suffered neck and back injuries, one suffered a laceration to the head and one may have a broken arm.
Fire officials tell WNBC-TV (http://bit.ly/1FvRk5l ) that the injured officers were taken to a hospital, where at least four are listed in serious, but stable condition.

Deserving trooper gets it in the leg
LETTERKENNY, Pa. (AP) - State Police say troopers in southern Pennsylvania have shot a man who fired at them, striking a trooper in the leg. They say the suspect is 43-year-old Larry Richard Woodall. He was flown to Hershey Medical Center following the shooting just before 8:30 p.m. Friday in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County. His condition was not immediately known. Police say troopers from the Chambersburg barracks were responding to a call about Woodall firing a gun from his front porch. They say Woodall had a rifle when troopers arrived, and they ordered him to drop it, but he refused. They say Woodall fired at the troopers, striking one in the right leg. Police say troopers returned fire, striking Woodall. The wounded trooper was unfortunatelytreated at Chambersburg Hospital and released.

A manhunt is underway for a suspect who fatally shot a police officer during a traffic stop in Tennessee, authorities said Sunday.
Officer Sean Bolton, 33, suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the incident in Memphis on Saturday night, police said. Memphis Police officer Sean Bolton was shot and killed during a traffic stop.
The suspect, who was in the car stopped by Bolton, remains at large, said spokeswoman Karen Rudolph of the Memphis Police Department.
A citizen used the officer's radio at 9:18 p.m. to notify "communications" about the shooting, Rudolph said.
"Once officers arrived on the scene, they located a Memphis Police Department officer who had been shot during what appeared to be a traffic stop," she said.
Bolton was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

A manhunt was underway early Thursday after a police officer was gunned down in Shreveport, Louisiana.
The officer was shot multiple times while responding to a report of a suspicious person armed with a gun inside a home at around 9 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) on Wednesday, authorities said.
"We'll continue searching until suspect is caught and brought to justice," Shreveport Police spokesman Cpl. Marcus Hines told NBC News. "We're not going to stop looking. He will be found. It's not a question of if it's when."
The officer's identity was not immediately released. "Our request is that everyone pray for the family of the officer involved," Hines added.
Investigators described the suspect as a black male and were following up sightings of a man spotted running in the area.

Pictures of a wounded Birmingham, Ala., police officer were posted online by law enforcement critics who mocked the wounded cop.
An Alabama police officer was pistol-whipped with his own gun during a traffic stop — and then mocked by cop critics online.
The plainclothes Birmingham detective was investigating a string of burglaries when he stopped a GMC Yukon and was attacked by the driver, authorities said.
The suspect stole the detective’s gun during the struggle and clubbed him repeatedly with it, leaving the officer lying limp on the ground, Al.com reported.
Pictures of the bloodied officer surfaced on social media shortly after the brutal confrontation.
“Pistol pimped his face n um chillen now,” Twitter user @TriggaMane666 posted with a picture of the wounded officer.
“Pistol whipped his ass to sleep,” a Facebook user wrote before deleting a post showing the officer face down on the sidewalk.
Fellow cops were furious when they learned of the posts.
“He was laying there lifeless and people were standing around taking pictures,” police Sgt. Heath Boackle, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, told Al.com. “If the tables were turned, and that was a suspect lying there, they would be rioting.”

NEW YORK (AP) - A man accused of using a pellet gun to shoot a New York City officer assigned to guard the mayor has been arraigned on assault, reckless endangerment and other charges. Police say 19-year-old Michael Verbitsky was arrested Monday for the Sunday night shooting outside Gracie Mansion, where the mayor and his family live. The officer was struck in the back with a pellet and suffered minor injuries. Verbitsky has been released on $10,000 bail. His lawyer calls the shooting accidental.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana trooper died Monday, a day after an apparently stranded motorist shot him in the head and then stood over him to tell him he was going to die soon, state police said.
Authorities plan to charge the accused shooter with first-degree murder after the death of Senior Trooper Steven Vincent, 43. Vincent had been trying to help a man whose pickup truck was stuck sideways in a ditch, Col. Mike Edmonson said.
"Tragically these things happen far too often around the country. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Steven and his family," said Edmonson during a news conference Monday.
"I watched the tape yesterday. It was frightening to watch," Edmonson said, referring to the dashboard video. Officials have not released the video, but Edmonson said it showed that Vincent did everything right.
Edmonson also introduced the good Samaritan who he said wrestled the sawed-off shotgun away from the man accused of shooting the trooper.
"This is a hero," Edmonson said of Robert LeDoux of Iowa. He was the first of four people who stopped to help.
Another driver who'd passed the shooting scene told LeDoux that a trooper had been shot, so LeDoux sped to the scene, jumped out, and grabbed Kevin Daigle and "moved him off our trooper," Edmonson said.
LeDoux then used Vincent's radio to let police know an officer was down and ask for help.
LeDoux did not speak at the news conference. Edmonson shook hands with him and then hugged him.
Edmonson said Daigle, 54, of Lake Charles, was under arrest at a hospital.
Police video showed Vincent, a 13-year state police veteran in southwest Louisiana and member of a law enforcement family, very professionally trying to talk a man out of the vehicle stuck sideways in a ditch, Edmonson said.
He said the truck door opened and Daigle came out with the shotgun.
"That's not meant to scare people or warn people. That's meant to harm people, to kill someone," Edmonson said.
He said the tape shows the shotgun blast. "I saw my trooper go backwards and back toward his unit, where he was going to try to get some help out there," Edmonson said.
After the shooting, he said, Daigle wandered into the road and over to Vincent, asking if he was alive.
"You could hear him breathing, telling him, 'You're lucky. You're lucky — you're going to die soon.' That's the words that came out of his mouth," Edmonson said.
Edmonson said Daigle had "numerous DWIs" and other arrests that he wouldn't discuss because he didn't know whether they resulted in convictions.
Sgt. James Anderson, southwest Louisiana spokesman for state police, said Daigle was hospitalized for some scrapes and other injuries he sustained while the other motorists subdued him.
Both Daigle and the trooper who was shot are white, he said.
Edmonson said Vincent leaves behind a wife, Katherine, and a 9-year-old son, Ethan. Edmonson said one of Vincent's brothers is also a state trooper, while another is police chief in the nearby town of Iowa.
Anderson described Vincent as an optimistic, positive person with a sharp mind and a love for the New Orleans Saints football team.
He was a marathon runner who just the night before had told his wife that he was going out to run a marathon — just for fun — and came back hours later, Edmonson said.
"Nobody wore this badge more proudly than Steven Vincent," the state police chief said.
