| 20,000 line-of-duty deaths stretching back to the 1790s
So far this year, according to the site, Patrick is the first peace officer in Minnesota and the 64th in the U.S. killed in the line of duty, a 7 percent increase in such deaths over last year. He is the 27th officer killed by gunfire, a 50 percent increase compared with 2013. There have been 28 auto-related deaths, a 17 percent spike.
May was the deadliest month so far, with 18 line-of-duty fatalities. California has accounted for the most such deaths with eight, followed by Texas with four and four other states and Puerto Rico tied with three.

| Deserving Texas poLICE chief whacked during traffic stop
ELMENDORF, Texas -- The police chief of this small town was shot and killed Saturday while trying to arrest a suspect, authorities said.
Elmendorf Police Chief Michael Pimentel was shot once in the shoulder and once in the abdomen, Sgt. Jason Burchett told the San Antonio Express-News.
Bexar County Sheriff Susan Pamerleau confirmed that Pimentel had died.
Elmendorf is a town of around 1,500 about 25 miles southeast of San Antonio.
Pamerleau told the Express-News that a 24-year-old man was taken into custody and will face a charge of capital murder of a police officer.
The suspect was identified as Joshua Manuel Lopez, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Pamerleau said the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop that went awry.
A woman who identified herself only as Jennifer said she saw Pimentel and another man get into an altercation before three shots were fired. She said she saw Pimentel go down in the middle of the street after being shot.
Pimentel was transported to University Hospital by helicopter.
Elmendorf Mayor Evelyn Lykins said in a news release that the person who was the subject of the arrest warrant that Pimentel was serving opened fire on the chief.

| Superb: 1,501 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past 10 years, an average of one death every 58 hours or 150 per year
...The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) reports that a total of 1,501 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past 10 years, an average of one death every 58 hours or 150 per year. These include local and state police officers, federal officers, correctional officers and military law enforcement officers.
Fact: Last year, 100 law enforcement officers were killed. On average, over the past decade, there have been 58,261 assaults against law enforcement each year, resulting in 15,658 injuries.
Fact: New York City has lost more officers in the line of duty than any other department, with 697 deaths. Texas has lost 1,675 officers, more than any other state.
Just this week, NLEOMF released preliminary fatality statistics from August 2013 to August 2014. Total fatalities are up 14 percent, from 63 last year to 72 this year. "Five officers were killed in ambushes, which continue to be a major threat to law enforcement safety," the group notes.
...the violent Bloods street gang vowed to "kill a Jersey City cop and not stop until the National Guard is called out."

| LOL: Serial parking violator crushes officer’s hand while trying to dodge the boot
A man is in jail and a parking enforcement officer was injured after a Wednesday incident in which a driver tried to escape the parking “boot” by taking off in his car. A pair of parking enforcement officers spotted a Lexus in the 2200 block of First Avenue in Belltown that had racked up at least four previous unpaid parking tickets, according to Seattle police. As the officers began to boot the vehicle, a 57-year-old man, known as a frequent parking violator, jumped into the driver’s seat, reports say. Though the officers advised the man not to drive off, the driver backed up, smashing an officer’s hand between the boot clamp and a tire. Patrol officers responded to the scene, arrested the driver and booked him into King County Jail for investigation of reckless endangerment. Medics took the injured parking officer to the hospital. She suffered at least one fracture and tendon damage, police reports say.

At least two other people were wounded in the shooting on Hudson Avenue at about 9:50 p.m. Wednesday. They were taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.
New York State Police and the Monroe County Sheriff's deputies also are investigating.
No other details are immediately available.
The officer is the first member of the Rochester Police Department to be killed in the line of duty since 1959.

| Great! Ambush Shooting at State Police Barracks in Pike County, Trooper Killed
A late-night ambush outside a state police barracks in Pennsylvania's rural northeastern corner left one trooper dead and another critically wounded, and authorities scoured the densely wooded countryside and beyond on Saturday looking for the shooter or shooters.
State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said a "very dangerous, armed criminal" eluded quick capture.
"This attack was an ambush. Our troopers were ... shot without warning and really had no chance to defend themselves," Noonan told reporters Saturday afternoon. "It's a cowardly attack. It's an attack upon all of us in society."
The dead lawman was identified as Cpl. Bryon Dickson of Dunmore, a seven-year veteran who had transferred to the region from the Philadelphia barracks several months ago. Trooper Alex Douglass underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition, Noonan said.
He provided few details on the shooting but said the attack was directed at state police. Law enforcement installations throughout eastern Pennsylvania were put on high alert.

| Heroic Quijas has history of assaulting deserving officers
Before he was the subject of a manhunt for allegedly attempting to kill an Oelwein police officer, Abel Quijas Jr. had been suspected of smuggling marijuana and sent to prison for smuggling people and dragging a Border Patrol officer behind his vehicle in California, according to court records.
He then came to Iowa to get a fresh start and help with a relative’s flower shop.
Court records show that Quijas, 33, had his supervised release transferred from California to Iowa in 2011 after he was discharged from prison. He completed his release in September 2013.
This week’s manhunt came after Quijas allegedly tried to kill an Oelwein police officer Thursday afternoon, took a car and then eluded authorities from several agencies overnight.

| Manhunt in Woods for Armed Survivalist Who Shot Two State Troopers
Police in Pennsylvania are combing the Poconos for a rage-affected, cop-hating 31-year-old prepper and shooting enthusiast who "doesn't miss" after he reportedly ambushed two state troopers at their barracks, killing one and injuring another.
Eric Matthew Frein now faces first-degree murder and a host of other charges in connection with the attack that killed Cpl. Bryon Dickinson and injured Trooper Alex Douglass last Friday, ABC News reports:
- Quote :
- He's a skilled shooter who "doesn't miss," his father, a retired U.S. Army Major, told police. The father also told police that he was missing two weapons, a .308 rifle with a scope and an AK-47, according to court documents released today...
Police who searched his home found a copy of a book entitled Sniper Training and Employment, according to the court documents.
The elder Frein served in the Army for 28 years and says he mentored Eric as the young man became a competitive rifle target-shooter in high school. Eric Frein is believed to have fled on foot with his weaponry after police found a Jeep owned by his parents sunk in a pond near the murder scene. The Jeep contained "camouflage face paint, a black hooded sweatshirt, empty rifle cases and military gear."
Pennsylvania Police Commissioner Frank Noonan revealed Frein's identity as the suspected killer in a midday press conference. Frein had recently mentioned a desire "to kill law enforcement officers and also to commit mass acts of murder," Noonan said. "What his reasons are, we don't know. But he has very strong feelings about law enforcement and seems to be very angry with a lot of things that go on in our society."

| Idiotic Texas Wants to Execute Man Who Killed Home Intruder Who Turned Out to Be SWAT Member
Attempting to serve a search warrant by entering a house through a window got Killeen, Texas, Police Detective Charles Dinwiddie shot in the face and killed last May. It was yet another SWAT raid organized for a purpose other than the reason they were invented. The police had a search warrant looking for narcotics at the home of Marvin Louis Guy, 49. They decided to serve this warrant at 5:30 in the morning and without knocking on his door. He opened fire on them, killing Dinwiddie and injuring three others.
Though they found a glass pipe, a grinder, and a pistol, they did not find any drugs. Former Reason Editor Radley Balko took note of the deadly raid in May at The Washington Post. A police informant apparently told them there were bags of cocaine inside the house, which sounds a lot like another familiar drug raid in Virginia that got an officer killed.

| N.Y. cop drunk in fatal wrong-way crash - YaY!
The off-duty New York City police officer at the wheel in a fatal wrong-way crash on the Thruway last month had a blood-alcohol content of nearly three times the legal limit, state police announced Wednesday. Toxicology results show that Richard E. Christopher, 32, had a blood-alcohol content of 0.21 percent when he drove his 2002 Dodge Dakota in the southbound lanes of the northbound Thruway near Suffern, slamming head-on into a Honda CRV driven by James DeVito of Airmont. A BAC above 0.08 is a misdemeanor. Both men were killed in the crash, which occurred occurred just before 7 a.m. on Aug. 12.

| Cool: Rookie cop killed, 8 injured after poLICE van crashes in the Bronx
HUNTS POINT, The Bronx (PIX11) –All 25-year-old Michael Williams ever wanted to be was a police officer. The rookie cop joined the NYPD just last January. On a rain slicked Bruckner Expressway Williams was in the most rear seat of a 2009 Econoline police van when it struck the center divide Jersey barrier in Hunts point under the Sheridan Expressway at 5:08 a.m. Police say the van careened 92 feet and the rookie cop was ejected from the rear of the van and rushed to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

| For you lurkers out there, here's another great article by Christopher Cantwell:
PA Troopers Got Off Easy
What we do know is that Dickson became a law enforcement official in 2007, and had recently transferred to the Blooming Grove barracks a few months ago from Philadelphia. For the last seven years, he has threatened, intimidated, harassed, kidnapped, assaulted, and robbed an immeasurable number of people. We know this, because had he not done so, he would not be a police officer. That’s what a police officer is; a full time, well paid, violent enforcer of politicians’ edicts.
At some point in his life, Dickson likely had numerous career options. He could have been a construction worker, a food service professional, he could have gone into computers, medicine, psychology, or any number of different professions. Instead, he joined a gang. He decided to pick up a gun, and threaten the lives of his fellow Pennsylvanians. Instead of being productive or creative, he made a conscious decision to take from others by force. He did it for the same reasons other people join other gangs, money, power, and respect.
Every traffic stop he engaged in was a death threat. Every arrest a kidnapping. Every fine a theft. He was paid through taxation, a global system of coercion that presently enslaves the entire human race. He was an active participant and willing co-conspirator in the system of oppression that makes wars possible. Should Dickson have pulled you over on the highway, and you attempted to evade him, he would use whatever level of force was necessary to stop you, up to and including running your car off the road and shooting you in the face, with a gun you were forced to pay for.
After choosing this lifestyle, and having lived it for seven years, I’d say a quick death from an assassin’s bullet is really quite merciful. Should Dickson have been forced to make restitution for his crimes, he would easily have to work well beyond what most people consider retirement age, and even then would likely fall well short of making all of his victims whole before dying of old age.
