Miliband argues for intervention

David Miliband, the foreign secretary, is to argue today that the UK has a moral imperative to intervene - diplomatically and militarily - in conflicts across the globe and to help further the spread of democracy. While admitting mistakes in the British engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan, he will tell his audience in Oxford that Britain must be unambiguously on the side of "civilian surges" for democracy. The Foreign Secretary will also warn against the rise of China and its authoritarian tendencies, something that means the world can no longer take "the forward march of democracy for granted."
