| Last month, Privacy International classified the UK as an 'endemic surveillance society', ranking it the worst country in the EU for surveillance and placing it on a par with such repressive states as Russia, China and Malaysia.
CCTV camera sales are soaring according to figures from electrical retailer Maplins. Over the last year, the chain store, which stocks more than 90 different security cameras and associated CCTV kits, has seen sales rise by more than 70 per cent over the last year and a startling 265 per cent since 2003 as householders have sought to protect their property. The revelation is part of a growing trend that civil liberties groups are warning is leading Britain towards becoming a surveillance society.
