A US warship has been forced to bypass the north Queensland town of Townsville after it was told there was no room to dock the 250m-long vessel for eight days.

The USS Essex, carrying more than 3,000 personnel, will instead sail for Cairns.

Sailors from the USS Essex were expected to inject $10 million into Townsville's economy during their eight-day shore leave ahead of joint American-Australian military exercise Talisman Sabre 09.

The Townsville Port Authority has told the US military that it was unable to accommodate the giant helicopter and troop carrier due to "commercial bookings" in the only two suitable berths.

A Townsville Port Authority spokeswoman says they have to honour contractional agreements with the port's commercial companies.
