| An Australian woman says she is haunted by the six months she spent in a Kuwaiti jail after being convicted for verbally assaulting the gulf state's ruler.
Nasrah Alshamery, 43, says it was the worst time in her life.
She was arrested at Kuwait International Airport in December last year after she was accused of insulting the Emir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabahhad, during a scuffle with airport officials after her sons asked for directions.
Her two-year sentence was suspended earlier this month after her lawyer appealed against her conviction at a hearing on June 4, and she was deported to Australia.
During her ordeal, Kuwaiti immigration officials hit her around the head and told her she could get out of her predicament if she defiled her Australian passport, Ms Alshamery told ABC Television last night.
One of her sons arrested with her at the airport, Abdulrahman Alshamery, said he too was hit by a guard.
"The guard was kicking my head, my head was against the wall and he was kicking it, kicking it and my head was really bouncing," he told Lateline.
Another son, Abdulazziz Alshamery, said he also was hit after he went to the aid of his father who was being attacked by immigration officials.
"I done what every person of my age can do if they see his dad getting hit by immigration and other policemen," he said.
"I was protecting my family. I hit them because they hit my family."
He said he was punched, kicked and slapped over a period of six hours during his detention.
The Kuwaiti-born mother of seven said it never occurred to her to swear against the emir.
"I was really surprised at the filthy language used against me," she said.
"Such a great country like Kuwait to employ barbaric people of this kind ... no respect for women.
"He hit me with his fist here," she told ABC TV, pointing to her head.
She said she was put in a cell with no bed and no blanket and was given food once every two or three days.
She was told she could get out of her predicament if she defiled her passport.
"He said this is your Australian passport and this is your mobile phone.
"He said just throw the passport on the ground and step on it with your foot."
She said she declined.
"I said, `Why should I do this? I have sworn an oath when getting the passport'."
"They put me in a small room with no bed and no blanket," Ms Alshamery said.
