| Subject: Hong Kong: Trading a Flat for a Houseboat Tue Jun 23, 2009 11:51 pm | |
| The captain’s bridge of the “Perfectly Chilled,” a 72-foot-long houseboat, isn’t used for navigation all that often, mostly because the vessel is only moved for repairs.
But it does give some insight into David and Karen DiDonato, the boat’s owners. A pair of flat-screen computers that display family photos and play songs are on display. So is a white prayer scarf, blessed by the Dalai Lama and given to them by a friend, laid out under a stack of books with titles like “Becoming Enlightened” and “The Art of Happiness.” Next to the books is a jar of bait that Mr. DiDonato uses to fish off the back of the boat.
It was the search for just such a calm, centered lifestyle that prompted the DiDonatos to buy the houseboat three years ago — and what is delaying their decision about the future, now that Mr. DiDonato’s employer wants him to take a new position in San Francisco.
