It's been revealed that the NSW government has introduced secret fee rises of up to 10 per cent on a range of RTA licence and number plate transactions despite promising no new tax increases in Tuesday's budget.

The Daily Telegraph says the tax hike, discovered in Friday's government gazette, was introduced three days after the budget.

It says the greatest slug will be on motorists seeking to transfer registrations, who will be hit with fees rising by almost $400.

Personalised or prestige number plates in some cases will rise by up to $40.

But disabled motorists have also been hit with a six per cent price increase for disabled parking permits from $33 to $35.

Many of the fee increases, while seemingly small in dollar terms, are two and three times the annual rate of inflation and unjustified, according to the NSW Opposition.

"The Rees government promised no tax increases in the budget, so not only is this desperate tax grab a broken promise, it hits the most vulnerable in our community," Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell said.

"With the budget deep in deficit, Labor is looking for any way to mask its 14 years of economic incompetence and mismanagement. Because of the poor public transport system, most people don't have any alternative but to drive.

"They have no choice to pay Labor's increased charges."
