| Subject: South Dakota's Collin Duprel makes modern history by becoming first Libertarian to net more than 20% of vote for U.S. House Fri Nov 11, 2022 3:34 am | |
| Dusty Johnson won his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives Tuesday, but his challenger Libertarian Collin Duprel also carved out a slice of history, becoming one of the first libertarians in South Dakota to win more than 20% of the vote in a race for the U.S. House.
Johnson had a resounding 77% of the vote, while Duprel received 23% of the vote, according to unofficial election results from the South Dakota Secretary of State website.
There was no Democrat candidate in the race.
In 2020, when Johnson was running for his second term against Libertarian Randy Luallin the result was 81% to 19%, according to the Secretary of State.
No Libertarian has served South Dakota in the U.S. House, according to SoDak Governors, an online South Dakota history resource.
There was also a 10-year gap between 2008 and 2018 of no Libertarians throwing their hat in the ring for the position.
Before Duprel and Luallin, Larry Rudebusch had only secured 2% of the vote when the Libertarian ran against Democrat Stephanie Herseth in 2006, according to the Secretary of State.
The same story can be said for other libertarian challengers securing only a single digit percentage of the vote through the 2000 general election when Sen. John Thune last returned to the House.
