| Subject: Rights violation: Switzerland to ban tobacco ads 'anywhere where young people might see them' Sun Feb 13, 2022 4:25 pm | |
| Switzerland today finally approved a ban on tobacco advertising 'anywhere where young people might see it.'
Nearly 57 per cent of voters and 16 of Switzerland's 26 cantons backed the near-total tobacco advertising ban.
The country lags far behind most wealthy nations in restricting tobacco advertising - a situation widely blamed on hefty lobbying by some of the world's biggest tobacco companies headquartered in the country.
Switzerland's tobacco industry contributes around six billion Swiss francs ($6.5 billion, 5.7 billion euros) to its economy annually.
The industry accounts for some 11,500 jobs and 27 per cent of Swiss adults smoke.
Most tobacco advertising is currently legal at a national level, except on television and radio, and when specifically targeting minors.
The Swiss government and parliament are among the opponents of the initiative, who argued that it goes too far.
Right-wing Liberal Party parliamentarian Philippe Bauer, warned: 'Today we are talking about cigarettes, but we will soon be talking about alcohol and meat.'
