| Subject: ‘Libertarian’ Tories are at least well informed Fri Dec 17, 2021 3:39 am | |

Your editorial (“Boosters are only part of UK’s answer to Omicron”, December 14) seeks to disparage “libertarian Tories whose views are out of kilter with much of the population”. The problem is that much of the population is singularly ill-informed.
Ask most people, for example, what proportion of the population has actually died of Covid, approximately how many people are in hospital with the virus or what has been the impact of Covid passports on infections in, say, Ireland and they will have little idea. They will, however, be very frightened and assert that “an awful lot” of people have died, including many children, that tens of thousands are in hospital with Covid and that vaccine passports are an effective way of preventing the virus from spreading. They will usually also exhibit great faith in masks.
It is just as well that at least some of our MPs take the trouble to keep themselves properly informed and a great pity that we are not all given more information about the costs of restrictive measures.
If more attention was given to disseminating hard data (not academic estimates) and less time spent in inculcating fear in the public, it would put these “libertarian” views in context.
