New Delhi: A stroke is one of the most debilitating and potentially fatal conditions that affect people worldwide. Due to narrowing of arteries, blood circulation and oxygen supply to the brain get hampered thereby triggering stoke. On one hand, experts recommend keeping an eye on modifiable risk factors such as diet, workout and abstinence from alcohol intake and smoking; and on the other, they recommend timely check-ups to lower risk over time. However, turns out that on the diet front, there is a particular fruit that can cut risk by half. Keep reading to find out what it is.

The fruit that fights stroke risk

With an increasing incidence of stroke worldwide, it is further important to keep an eye on modifiable risk factors of the condition – and there is one fleshy fruit which is blessed with protective effects and can cut risk by half. Pears, a white fleshy fruit is deemed effective at cutting stroke risk. According to Harvard Health, pears are a good source of fibre and catechin – plant-based compounds. These catechins are also found in apples and cocoa and are linked to better management of blood pressure, lowering bad cholesterol levels, improved blood vessel health and lower risk of blood clots.

Experts and research have earlier highlighted how daily intake of fruits can be beneficial for heart health. Fleshy fruits of various colours and vegetables can lower stroke risk with their antioxidant content.

The benefits of pears explained

According to a 2011 study, a group of Dutch experts revealed that fruits with highest phytochemical content can be effective in lowering brain stroke risk. The lead author revealed that intake of white fruits and vegetables can prove effective against stroke risk – for instance, eating an apple every day.

For this, researchers studied over 20,000 adults with an average age of 41. At the onset of the study, none of them had a history of heart disease. Experts analysed apple and pear intake of the participants – both fruits being a rich source of flavonoids and dietary fibre. During the 10-year follow-up period, 233 stroke episodes were recorded and it was discovered that the incidence was 52 per cent lower in those who had a high intake of white fruits and vegetables.

Conclusively, the team determined that stroke risk was lower by 9 per cent with every 25 grams of white fruits and vegetables consumed in a day. Studies have also shed light on how following a Mediterranean diet or one similar to the routine can significantly lower stroke risk. This effect, however, is more prominent in women than men.
