(CNN) -- A gunman killed five people and wounded two at a police station and city council meeting in suburban St. Louis on Thursday night before officers shot and killed him, police said.
Two of those killed were police officers, said Tracy Panus, spokeswoman for St. Louis County police.
"We have what we believe to be our suspect," Panus said. "There's no reason for the Kirkwood residents to feel unsafe at this point."
Mayor Mike Swoboda was wounded and in critical condition, and Suburban Journals newspaper reporter Todd Smith was in satisfactory condition, St. John's Mercy Hospital spokesman Bill McShane said told The Associated Press.
The shootings began shortly after 7 p.m. just outside the city hall in Kirkwood, Missouri, when a man approached a police officer in the parking lot of the Kirkwood police station and fatally shot him, Panus said. The officer died at the scene.
The suspect then went into the city council chambers, she said, and killed a second police officer, then fatally shot three city officials who were attending the meeting, Panus said.

| The gunman: Charles Lee Thornton
Mr. Thornton, you Sir, have my deepest respect!
You are an innocent among the vultures who have been feeding off you, all of your life. But then you finally worked it all out... on your own... that you are being treated as a slave, which indeed you are... or so the system claims...
Realizing the evil which rules and controls your life, you decided, rightly I might add, not to take it anymore...
We thank you for your exemplary behavior! We thank you for your courage! We understand your pain!
You will not be forgotten!
This man deserves the greatest respect!

| City Hall slayings sprang from series of confrontations
KIRKWOOD, Mo. — Town gadfly Lee "Cookie" Thornton was well-known in the cozy St. Louis suburb of Kirkwood, and his vendetta against City Hall was legendary.
Thornton, 52, was irate over zoning decisions that went against him, was furious at dozens of parking tickets that led to a total of some $2,000 in fines, and was livid over City Council attempts to curb his ranting at city meetings.
He was twice removed and charged with disorderly conduct stemming from his outbursts at meetings in 2006. In late January, a St. Louis judge threw out Thornton's lawsuit claiming the city had infringed on his freedom of speech.
That decision, family members said Friday, sent Thornton over the edge. The result was Thursday night's shooting spree in and around City Hall that left five people dead — including city officials he had hounded for years — before police shot and killed Thornton.
