| Subject: Local Libertarians reprimand Northam's 'draconian' COVID-19 restrictions Tue Dec 08, 2020 8:27 pm | |
| The Lynchburg Area Libertarians issued a statement last night reprimanding Gov. Ralph Northam's increased COVID-19 restrictions, regressing the commonwealth from Phase 3 to "Phase 1.5."
"The Lynchburg Area Libertarians strongly disagree with the governor’s decision to bring the state of Virginia back to phase 1.5, and to implement wide-ranging mandates in the first place," local Libertarian spokesperson Aaron Sobczak said. "Every locality in the Commonwealth has different needs, and different capacities. We strongly suggest that the needs of each locality can best be met by each locality, as well as by each individual."
Large government mandates are rarely effective, and always encroach on personal liberty, Sobczak said.
He argued that businesses should be open, and should operate as they deem necessary, because he believes every business is essential.
"The governor’s authority to implement such mandates seems weak at best, as it is the legislature’s job to legislate policy, and other state supreme courts have deemed such measures unconstitutional," Sobczak said. "Richmond and the governor do not, and cannot know or understand the needs of every business or individual in the Commonwealth. Personal liberty should never be undermined by collective security, and the Lynchburg Area Libertarians strongly oppose such draconian measures."
