MOTORISTS who see petrol stations driving up their prices over Easter should report them, the NRMA said yesterday.

Prices in Sydney should be between 123 and 125 cents a litre this weekend, a spokesman from the motoring organisation said, and should not exceed 130 cents.

Average petrol prices are predicted to be the lowest for this holiday period since 2005.

If people notice petrol stations charging more than 130 cents in Sydney, the NRMA is encouraging them to use their mobile phones, or go online, to record the price on the NRMA's new motorist feedback website, Road Tube, www.roadtube.com.au.

The president of NRMA Motoring & Services, Wendy Machin, said people should not "suffer in silence". They should send video, photos or blog comments to the website. Motorists can then log on to see which stations have the highest prices, and the data will be collected and given to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

"The NRMA will collate the reports from the motoring public and present them to the petrol commissioner," she said.

A strengthening exchange rate and reductions in the price of Singapore's refined petrol have brought prices down this year.

Last year prices for the Easter long weekend, the biggest driving weekend of the year, were about 150 cents, and hovered around 135 cents in 2006 and 2007.

The petrol commissioner, Joe Dimasi, said he welcomed measures which encouraged competition, but he warned holidaymakers not to be shocked if they found higher prices outside the city.

"Across New South Wales country prices can be, on average, 5 or 6 cents higher than Sydney," he said.

A spokesman from the NRMA denied the website was designed to supplement the Government's plan for a FuelWatch website, which was voted down in the Senate last year.

Ron Bowden, chief executive of the Service Station Association, welcomed the new site but reminded motorists that the Easter long weekend was subject to the weekly price cycle. "You can't have cheap Tuesday seven days a week," he said.
