A meme shared by Maury County Mayor Andy Ogles has sparked outrage and disappointment from some of his constituents and others across Middle Tennessee while gathering support from others and igniting online tensions.
The post, a photograph of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, reads “Why Biden no get virus? He sniff everyone.”
It was posted on the mayor’s official Facebook page. He is an active member of the Republican Party.
Ogles wrote “Hmmmm?” when initially sharing the message.

Many voiced their disdain for the messaging, as others shared their support of the statement.
“Your post is a reflection of your own ignorance, mayor,” wrote Phillip Branham of Spring Hill. “What a pathetic excuse for a leader.”
“Oh I get it...mock an entire race of people due to one person’s actions...seems reasonable,” wrote Dennis Hustle Houston of Leverage. “Andy Ogles Maury County Mayor tuck you’re racism in, it’s showing again.”
“Maury Co deserves better representation,” wrote Mercedes Badilla. “You are trash. Sad.”
Others voiced their support for the conservative leader.
“Mayor Andy sure does know how to trigger the liberal snowflakes!” wrote Lisa Wacker. “God bless Andy Ogles!”
Following the post’s circulation of more than 1,000 reactions, the mayor added to the post stating: “For those of you freaking out, this meme is of Kim Jong Un, the brutal dictator of N(orth) Korea who is guilty of mass genocide. Your outrage is a reflection of your ignorance.”
He later posted another meme further mocking Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
Following the large reaction to posts, Ogles promised to make similar posts on a daily basis.
“Given the popularity of my meme tonight, I will do my best to post one daily. #snowflake,” the mayor wrote.
Ogles was elected to serve as the mayor of Maury County in 2018.
He is the former executive director of Americans for Prosperity, a libertarian and conservative political advocacy group in the United States funded by David Koch and Charles Koch.
He penned an amendment to appeal the Hall Income Tax with former state Rep. and current state Sen. Mark Pody, R-Lebanon. Signed into law in 2016, the bill cut the income tax rate from 6% to 5% with the “legislative intent” that the tax rate be reduced by 1% annually, with the state set to have no personal income tax by 2022.
With his wife and children, Ogles moved to Columbia from neighboring Franklin five years ago.
He previously planned to challenge U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., for his seat, until Corker announced he was not running. When U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn announced her candidacy, Ogles withdrew and supported her.
His cousin, Brandon Ogles, is a state representative for District 61 representing parts of Williamson County.
“Kim Jong Un is a brutal genocidal dictator that made a fool of, and ate Trump’s lunch. But that didn’t stop you from using him to score petty points with your minions ... and that is clearly a measure of your and your followers’ ignorance,” wrote Dennis Joseph Todaro.
Another called on the mayor to do better as a leader of the community.
“As county mayor you have a duty to be better than this,” Beth Fullerton wrote. “The people who have lost loved ones deserve that respect alone. Instead of being divisive, you would be more effective if you tried to unify us. I’m a human first, then an American, then a Democrat.”
