In solidarity with the protagonists of the protests over the death of George Floyd, several American celebrities announced donations of hundreds of thousands of dollars, in particular to bail out the arrested protesters.
The cast of the Brooklyn comedy series Nine-Nine, which is staged inside a New York police station, said it would donate about $ 100,000 to the National Bail Fund Network.
Brooklyn 99 actors and co-creators “condemn the murder of George Floyd and support the many people who speak out against police violence across the country,” notes a brief statement that announced this donation, tweeted by Stephanie Beatriz, the series actress who embodies the rigid but affectionate detective Rosa Díaz.
Actor Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) announced that they have donated $ 200,000 to the NAACP legal aid fund, the largest black rights organization in the United States.
“We never had to think about preparing our children (…) for what could happen if they stopped us in our car. We don’t know what it’s like to live every day (…) We are ashamed of having allowed ourselves to not be sufficiently informed about the scope of systemic racism“wrote the American actor and Canadian actress on Instagram.
Accustomed to acid tweets directed at Donald Trump, the model and television presenter Chrissy Teigen he was also involved with initiatives of this type.
After writing in a first post on Twitter that she would donate $ 100,000 “to pay the bail bonds of protesters arrested across the country”, Teigen decided to double the bet after a user accused her of supporting “looters and criminals”.
“Oh, they are going to need more money then. It will be $ 200,000,” he replied.
Many celebrities are showing their support for the protests through their social networks and expressing horror after the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died of asphyxiation in Minneapolis by a white police officer who rested his knee on his neck for long minutes while the victim was unable to breathe while immobilized on the floor.
