| STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- In the midst of violent civil rights protests across the United States after George Floyd, a black man, was allegedly murdered by a Minneapolis police officer, the founder of Blue Lives Matter New York on Saturday extended an invitation to Black Lives Matter.
“I extend out my hand ... as an opportunity to show the world that we are not so different,” said Blue Lives Matter Founder Joe Imperatrice, who suggested a candlelight vigil to honor Floyd’s memory. “Coming together and unifying can show the world that through power in numbers, with aching hearts, with pure intentions, we can be the catalysts to get on the road to finally making things right.”
Black Lives Matter New York declined the invite, responding simply: “Blue Lives Matter wore T-shirts that said ‘I can breathe’ after the death of Eric Garner.”
In a statement released soon after the video surfaced, Black Lives Matter New York Chairman Hawk Newsome said the “days of Black America sitting back and allowing police to brutalize and kill our brothers and sisters are done.”
“We have no protection from politicians and definitely not other police," he added. "How can there be good cops when they don’t intervene when another officer is murdering someone?”
