| The Green and Libertarian parties in Illinois have filed a federal lawsuit against Governor Pritzker and members of the Illinois State Board of Elections. Because in many districts, the Green and Libertarian parties are not considered established parties, candidates need a larger amount of petition signatures to make it on the ballot. Both party leaders say given the current COVID-19 pandemic, petitioners are not allowed to, nor do they feel safe, collecting signatures from the public. They say candidates are likely to be kicked out of races that past elections have demonstrated they deserve to be in. "So it's rendered the whole enterprise literally impossible for us to get our candidates on the ballot, even though both the Green party and the Libertarian party have shown repeatedly in recent election cycles that we are capable of doing this under normal circumstances," says Illinois Green Party Co-Chair Rich Whitney. Leaders say they want an exemption this year, to place their candidates on the ballot without completing the petition process.
