| The Benton County Quorum Court discussed the possibility of becoming a Bill of Rights Sanctuary County.
BENTON COUNTY, Ark. — The Benton County Quorum Court discussed the possibility of becoming a Bill of Rights Sanctuary County at a meeting on February 18, 2020.
The proposed ordinance was written by the county Libertarian Party in response to red flag laws being passed in other parts of the country. The court voted to table the ordinance for a later date. They also voted to create a subcommittee to continue discussions on what the ordinance would mean for Benton County.
"They did have some good discussion today. Of course I would have preferred if they had approved the ordinance that was presented, but I understand that you have to have debate back and forth," said Michael Kalagias, chairman of Benton County Libertarian Party.
According to the ordinance, if passed, it would provide protection of certain unalienable rights. The Benton County Quorum Court was a packed house full of opinions with some of those for it.
"I don't need the state to tell me what to do I don't believe the state has any right to regulate my rights. Any minor intrusion on civil liberties is intrusion all together. You either have rights or you don't," said Brad Baddock.
There were also people who were against the proposed ordinance.
"I felt the text of the ordinance to be unconstitutional at its face," said Sheila Gallagher.
The main dispute that arose out of the proposed ordinance was whether or not Benton County should protect its citizens from the enforcement of certain gun control measures. The decision to table the ordinance and continue those discussions was once again met with mixed opinions.
"This is something that people feel passionate about, and that we need to have more discussion for, and it's not something that they just need to table and get rid of completely," said Baddock.
Gallagher said, "It's okay with me if they put it on the table, as long as they ship that table some place else in the country."
The subcommittee is expected to be created before the ordinance or a resolution is brought back up for discussion at quorum court.
