A corrupt police chief has been sentenced to 13 years in jail for his role in a fire at a southern Chinese nightclub that killed 44 people, state media reported on Saturday.

Yang Zhouwu, former police chief for a district of the city of Shenzhen, was found guilty of taking 300,000 yuan ($A67,227) in bribes from the nightclub's managers and neglecting his duties, broadcaster CCTV said.

Five other people including a former fire service chief, a police officer and several civil servants also received jail sentences of up to six years, CCTV reported.

The court in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, said they all bore some responsibility for the unsafe conditions at the Dance King nightclub.

The fire last September was started by fireworks set off indoors and also left 64 people wounded.

An inquiry found the club had failed to take the necessary precautions against fire and had been able to continue operating by bribing officials, notably Yang.

Entertainment venues in China frequently neglect safety and similar disasters as bars, clubs and karaoke venues are not unusual.
