During the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, a security guard named Richard Jewell discovered a bag containing three pipe bombs at the Centennial Olympic Park. When the bag exploded, more than 100 people were injured and one was killed. Those numbers would have been higher if not for Jewell’s vigilance.
Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Richard Jewell, shows how a hero (played by Paul Walter Hauser) came to be seen as a villain. It is a film of understated performances and quiet rage. Based on a long article published in 1997 in Vanity Fair, it shows how the media, academy and federal bureaucracy conspired to destroy a man’s life. The process began when Ray Cleere (Charles Green), the president of Piedmont College, where Jewell had been a campus policeman, called the FBI to suggest that Jewell had planted the bomb in order to gain public attention. The bureau, then led by Louis Freeh, seized on the theory.
Even though not a single piece of evidence implicated him, Jewell’s name was leaked to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The paper’s inculpatory story changed his life forever. In the eyes of his accusers, Jewell embodied every stereotype of white, rural, religious Americans. Abandoned by both his father and his stepfather, he was a gun-owning Baptist with a chaotic domestic life and an “authoritarian” personality. He was tempting to blame and easy to smear.
