| Subject: Thieving Austin City Council repeals Lake Austin tax exemptions Wed Jan 22, 2020 11:02 pm | |
| The owners of hundreds of Lake Austin properties who have avoided paying city of Austin property taxes for decades will now be subject to taxation after the Austin City Council repealed a 33-year-old exemption Thursday. The move came after the American-Statesman reported that roughly 400 properties that make up some of the most idyllic real estate in the city, mainly lakefront homes with an average value of $2.1 million, had not been subject to any city taxes despite being within the city limits. The unanimous vote came over the opposition of several residents who told the council that they should not pay city property taxes because city-provided services are inadequate. They added that the financial shock of what could amount to a 20% increase to their annual tax bills might force some of them to move. Judy Harward, who has owned a home on Pearce Road for 28 years, said she and her husband structured their fixed income finances on the premise that they would continue not paying city taxes. She said adding city taxes would increase her tax bill by thousands of dollars — Travis County property records from 2018 show it would likely increase by $5,796. “We were blindsided by the news that city taxes are now applicable,” Harward told the council. “Being on a fixed income means we cannot afford this increase. I know there are many of us in the same boat.”
