Dirty tissues and a sex review website helped investigators determine a South Carolina massage parlor was a front for prostitution, officials say.

The owner of the Lowcountry business was arrested Monday after state investigators say she was running a business that provided sexual services for money, WCIV and other news outlets report.

It all started in 2018 when the S.C. Law Enforcement Division got a tip about a Moncks Corner massage parlor, according to a warrant signed last week.

Investigators say they looked through trash from Pearl Spa and found “evidence of sexual nature to include used tissues, suspected of containing biological samples namely semen, and used female yeast infection medication capsules.”

Then in August, an agent went undercover on his visit to the business, his department says.

When his massage was almost done, he “negotiated a sexual act” with a Pearl Spa employee, who told him to come back after she finished with another customer, according to officials.

Also during the investigation, agents found recent posts for the business on a website used to rate sexual encounters at massage parlors, the S.C. Law Enforcement Division says.

“The reviews left by these customers indicated that they received illicit sexual services during their massages,” according to agents.

Last month, investigators say they searched the business, formerly known as Wenxin Day Spa and roughly 35 miles northwest of Charleston.

There, they found receipts from mostly male clients, according to the warrant. The customers sometimes gave disproportionate tips, leading investigators to think the extra money was going toward illegal activity.

Police say Hong Song Wang allowed her business to offer sexual services “either through promotion or lack of supervision.”

The 49-year-old owner was charged with prostitution first offense — keep or set up a house of ill fame or brothel, according to officials and multiple news outlets. Court records show she was out on bond Tuesday.

She was charged with similar crimes in neighboring Dorchester County but didn’t have to put up money to get out of jail there, WCSC reported Wednesday.

In that case, officials say an undercover agent in October went to Miao Massage Spa in North Charleston, where a “worker took off the agent’s towel and massaged his private parts,” according to the station. The business is also known as Massage Serenity Spa, WCSC reported.

A woman with the same name as Wang had an active massage therapy license as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation
