| A member of Britain's House of Lords has been jailed for 12 weeks for dangerous driving after a court heard he sent and received a series of text messages minutes before a fatal accident on a motorway.
Lord Nazir Ahmed, 51, was involved in a collision which left a Slovakian man dead on the motorway near Rotherham, in Yorkshire, northern England, on Christmas Day in 2007.
He could now face expulsion from Prime Minister Gordon Brown's ruling Labour Party, which he represents in the unelected upper parliamentary chamber the House of Lords.
"The Labour Party does not comment on individual cases but under the party's rules any member who receives a custodial sentence is subject to automatic exclusion," a party spokesman said.
The judge at Sheffield Crown Court said he was satisfied that the text messaging had finished before the accident took place and was not connected to the fatal incident.
