The mother of a mentally-ill man who deliberately drove a car through the front doors of a Brisbane City Council office during an overnight CBD rampage has pleaded for his return.

Police said the man was behind the wheel of a white utility which crashed through the George Street building about 11.30pm before lodging it on an oversized decorative metal ball at Reddacliff Place, outside the Treasury Casino, and fleeing on foot.

The man's mother, identified only as Judy, said her son had been granted leave from a Brisbane mental health facility yesterday but failed to return by 4pm as required.

She said he had taken her ute, which had been used in the incident.

"The police have been looking for him all night. We are very fearful for his life at this stage," Judy told ABC Radio this morning.

"Just in the last fortnight he showed signs of deterioration.

"In this case, I saw it coming."

Judy said she believed her son had deliberately targeted the council because his head was "full of the world's problems" and he had not been thinking clearly.
