Rachida Dati became the country's most high-profile single mother by returning to her post so soon.

She famously refused to name the father of her daughter Zohra fuelling speculation that he may be a high-profile figure.

The 43-year- old divorcee admits to a 'complicated private life' but her decision to rush back after the Caesarean section earlier this month divided women.

Some hailed her as a superwoman proving it was possible to juggle motherhood with a prestigious job. Others said she had betrayed all those who had fought for maternity leave.

Miss Dati insisted that her decision to rush back was fuelled by a fear of being sidelined. Now, just a week after she said 'non, non et non' to reports she would be sidelined, she is to leave government and stand in the European elections.

President Sarkozy is said to be unhappy with her erratic performance since taking office in 2007.

It is a rapid turnaround for the first politician from a north African background to reach a senior position in the French cabinet. She was a symbol of Mr Sarkozy's desire to inject diversity into French politics.

He celebrated her against the odds success story, as the second of 12 children born to a Moroccan labourer and illiterate Algerian mother.

But her reputation has suffered recently, with critics accusing her of developing a taste of luxury and being heavyhanded with magistrates, prison guards and her staff.

Political sources said Miss Dati would represent Mr Sarkozy's centre-right UMP party at June's European elections and would leave the government just ahead of the vote.

Miss Dati, who is also mayor of Paris's seventh district, was said to be 'resigned' to leaving.

A UMP official said: 'The president's choice takes precedence,' suggesting that this was Mr Sarkozy's offer of an honourable exit.'
