| HONG KONG: Laurent Nkunda, the feared and flamboyant Congolese rebel leader, was apprehended Friday by a joint force of Rwandan and Congolese army troops, news agencies reported.
The soldiers converged Thursday on Nkunda's base camp at Bunagana, in eastern Congo, but Nkunda fled during the subsequent fighting and crossed into Rwanda, where he was captured. The account of Nkunda's arrest came from Captain Olivier Hamuli, a spokesman for the joint force, according to the Associated Press.
It was unclear whether Nkunda's apprehension would make him vulnerable to an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for atrocities committed during his years of fighting in eastern Congo. The most recent outrage, according to human rights investigators, occurred in November at Kiwanja, where his men executed civilians and burned camps housing 30,000 displaced people.
Nkunda, loathed by many in eastern Congo for his ruthless tactics, often refers to himself in the third person and likes to be photographed holding a scepter topped with the silver-plated head of an eagle.
