| A Gold Coast police officer who contracted a disease after being bitten and spat on during an arrest may no longer be able to have children of his own.
Queensland Police Union (QPU) spokesman Ross Musgrove believed the officer, whose name has been withheld for privacy reasons, contracted the transmittable disease while arresting a suspect.
Mr Musgrove would not confirm the exact nature of the disease, but told brisbanetimes.com.au that it was transmittable and it could prevent the officer and his partner from having their own children.
The disease is not HIV, police have confirmed.
The QPU has called for mandatory sentences for people who spit at police officers.
Mr Musgrove said spitting on police was a worrying trend.
"It's a change in the manner in which people treat each other," he said.
