| Nursery staff are being told not to call children 'boys' and 'girls'.
New guidelines from the Care Inspectorate (CI) is urging childcare providers to introduce ‘gender-equal play’ so that boys are encouraged to play girls’ games, and vice versa.
There are even suggestions to use the word 'humanity' instead of 'mankind' and to stop reading books like Mr Squirrel in a bid to break down masculine stereotypes.
Children should also be shown images of same-sex parents in educational materials, according a story in the Daily Mail
And posters displaying male ballet dancers are being encouraged to break down gender divisions.
The CI, which inspects registered childcare providers in Scotland and is taxpayer-funded, said the guidelines have been brought in because ‘childhood and play is becoming more gendered and polarised between girls and boys’.
It is not clear yet whether the guidelines are being introduced in England too.
The organisation has joined forces with campaigners at Zero Tolerance – which works to eradicate male violence against women – to produce the guide.
