| DOZENS of prison officers committed criminal offences last year, including bashing inmates, assaulting and bullying co-workers and stealing, according to a confidential Corrective Services report.
The department held 162 misconduct hearings into staff between last January and June and found enough evidence to warrant disciplinary or further action in 65 cases. Despite these findings, only one case, where an officer stole property from another officer, was referred to police.
This meant officers who committed offences, such as assaulting a co-worker, were merely referred to local managers for unspecified action.
A prisoner advocacy group said the department's handling of the cases sends the wrong message to prison officers.
"In a closed institution, like a prison, accountability is essential," Brett Collins, a spokesman for Justice Action, said. "These figures, in fact, show the opposite. They show a preparedness by the department to hide the embarrassment of the bad and illegal behaviour of its officers to cover-up criminal acts of brutality and dishonesty."
The department's Professional Conduct Management Committee investigated 23 allegations of officers bashing inmates and substantiated one case.
Seven unsubstantiated cases were still referred to local managers for action and another four were still under investigation. There were five substantiated cases where officers stole from inmates, other employees or the department.
The report, obtained using Freedom of Information laws, also detailed how eight officers had police action taken against them for alleged crimes committed outside work, such as assault occasioning actual bodily harm and drink driving. The committee is still investigating 16 misconduct cases, including four allegations of officers bashing inmates.
The papers and minutes of the committee are sent to the Independent Commission Against Corruption, said Simon Crittle, a spokesman for Justice Minister John Hatzistergos. "A senior police officer sits on the [committee] and police may take action over incidents that involve criminal conduct." PLAYING UP
