| Australia's spies wrongly intercepted the calls of at least two ordinary people - once by writing down the wrong number, and by continuing to listen in on calls despite a number being disconnected and sold to a unrelated member of the public.
ASIO self-reported a number of breaches to the Inspector General of Intelligence and Security in 2017-18, revealed in the annual report of the watchdog.
In one case, communications to and from a device were intercepted by the agency due to "the erroneous transcription of a telephone number", the report said.
"Once it became aware of the incident, the organisation immediately took steps to cease interception of the service and the intercepted communications were deleted."
