A SYDNEY woman is facing up to seven years in a Kuwaiti jail after arguing with immigration officials in the emirate.

Nasrah Alshamery, 43, was arrested after allegedly insulting Kuwait's ruling prince, even though her daughter said she did not even know his name.

Two of her sons, Abdulaziz, 22, and Adbulrahman, 18, are facing charges of assault after they intervened to help their elderly father, Soliman, whom they said was being accosted by officials.

The fracas occurred while the family was on holiday, their daughter Wasa, 21, said. They entered Kuwait on December 23 and asked an official where they could get a visa and were insulted, they said

After the argument all nine members of the family were put in a cell. Ms Alshamery was charged after allegedly insulting the Emir, Sheikh Sabah IV Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Soliman, Wasa and four of her brothers were returned to Australia. The two other brothers were given bail. Ms Alshamery is set to reapply for bail on January 21.
