The footballer is reportedly furious after advisers urged the Everton star to invest in schemes allowing people to claim relief on artificial losses from movies.

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs have argued it amounted to tax avoidance.

Former England players Steve McManaman, Kevin Phillips and Ian Walker have been warned 'catastrophic' bills also await them in relation to a separate scheme, reports The Sun.

Original calculations said the 30-year-old could have to pay back £3.5million in tax.

The film investment scheme, called Invicta 43, is alleged to have generated tax relief for 225 wealthy individuals.

The company bought rights to the Hollywood films, Fred Claus and 10,000 BC, which they were able to claim tax relief on.
