| Subject: Have we moved beyond 'peak cash'? Debit cards are set to overtake notes and coins as the public turns to digital payments Tue Feb 20, 2018 7:35 pm | |
| The demise of cash in Britain is set to reach a key turning point this year as debits cards overtake notes and coins as the UK's favoured payment method.
Data shows the UK will reach 'peak cash' in 2018 as Britons increasingly turn away from ATM machines, preferring to pay for goods online, or using cards and apps.
The switch to a 'cashless society' means the number of cash machines in Britain is likely to fall, especially in larger towns and cities, experts said.
Some have warned the move could hurt groups who still rely heavily on coins and notes, such as Britain's elderly.
