IT IS either a spontaneous uprising by hotel patrons, furious over the State Government's tough new rules on the serving of alcohol, or a slick liquor industry campaign.

Drinkers in Sydney pubs are being asked to pose for photographs with prefabricated thought bubbles attacking the laws, introduced last month in a crackdown on alcohol-related violence at 48 NSW venues.

The pictures of the patrons and the bubbles, which carry messages such as "Hands off my social life", "Don't treat me like a child", and "I'll decide when it's time to go home thanks", are then posted on a website called dontpunishus.com.

The group general manager of Keystone hotel group, Anthony Prior, said he understood the campaign had been proposed by four hotel owners, including his company's Fraser Short.

Mr Prior said the campaign had been funded by the Australian Hotels' Association. Asked how much it had contributed, he said: "It's quite substantial. It's not a small number."

But the association's spokeswoman, Sally Fielke, said that was wrong. "The AHA certainly supports the campaign," she said, admitting "it's industry driven, [but] we have offered very small financial support". Asked whose idea it was, Ms Fielke said pub patron David Hempton.

Yesterday Mr Hempton described himself as a freelance consultant and former New York and London banker now in real estate, and agreed it was his idea.
