OZschwitz: Statists threaten serfs over New Year's party drinking

DRUNKEN yobbos look out - the acting Premier and the Police Commissioner are on a mission to stop your New Year's Eve shenanigans.

With a $6 million fireworks display featuring more than 100,000 individual cracks, bangs and sparkles by the City of Sydney, the Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione, is determined to stop the drunken fringe from ruining the night for an expected crowd of 1.5 million.

"New Year's Eve is for everybody. Our role in policing an event like this is to ensure that it is not hijacked by the drunken yobbos," he said yesterday.

The acting Premier, Carmel Tebbutt, also delivered a warning to the more ebullient among us, asking them to to keep a lid on overly liquored-up displays. "New Year's Eve is a chance to enjoy yourselves, it's a celebration, but as we enjoy ourselves and we usher in the new year, we also ask that people exercise a little bit of common sense," Ms Tebbutt said.

"Because, with a bit of common sense, a bit of planning, we can make sure that everyone has a great New Year's Eve."

The event will officially launch at 3pm, with vintage and stunt planes performing for the crowds, and a boating display at dusk. The traditional family fireworks display at 9pm will be followed by a parade of 50 tall ships, ferries and other boats illuminated with images representing the 2008 New Year's Eve theme of Creation.

The midnight fireworks display, comprising more than five tonnes of fireworks, will form the centrepiece of a night of celebrations and will feature a pyrotechnic storm simulation, with fake lightning, thunder and rain.

And while the public watch the show, a large police contingent will keep an eye out for excessive alcohol consumption.
