| Twitter suspended the account of member of Germany’s parliament after she posted an inflammatory tweet about Muslims this week, CNN reported on Tuesday.
Beatrix von Storch, a member of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, was temporarily suspended from the site after she blasted a police account that had posted a New Year's tweet in Arabic. CNN reported that she had lashed out at the account for appeasing "barbaric, gang-raping Muslim hordes of men." Twitter told the outlet that the tweet violated its hate speech policies. Twitter also removed similar tweets posted by other AfD members, according to CNN.
Germany started enforcing a new law on Monday that would subject social media companies to fines of up to $60 million if they do not remove posts containing hate speech within 24 hours of being flagged. Von Storch said that Facebook had also “censored” a similar message she had posted on that site. Police in Cologne are reportedly investigating von Storch for hate speech after the tweet.
