| YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) -- A racketeering lawsuit that accused a fruit company of hiring illegal workers has been dismissed in Yakima.
U.S. District Judge Robert H. Whaley granted summary judgment Wednesday in favor of Evans Fruit of Yakima. The company bills itself as Washington state's largest apple grower.
Whaley ruled that Ambrosio Marin and Miguel Sanchez, former tractor drivers for Evans, failed to make their case.
The plaintiffs' lawyer, Howard W. Foster of Chicago, is known for filing racketeering lawsuits involving the hiring of illegal immigrants. He had been granted several continuances for more time to gather evidence, but the judge ruled that there was not enough to justify a trial.
Company officials have maintained since the lawsuit was filed in September 2006 that managers and executives never knowingly hired illegal workers.

So, what was their problem with Evans hiring "illegal" workers? Were they attempting to (violently) restrict the labour supply in order to maintain their wages? |
