| Subject: Children's reading ability is significantly lower when there are few books in the home Tue Dec 05, 2017 6:04 pm | |
| While there is much to celebrate and consider about the latest data on literacy, one finding stands out for me. Children's reading ability is significantly lower (80 points on average) when there are few books in the home. Having a positive attitude towards reading did not matter if the child had limited access to books at home.
This powerful finding echoes a study conducted in 2014 with over 200,000 children in 42 countries that demonstrated the number of books in the home had a strong influence on academic performance. The effect was especially strong for children from low-income families and those with low-educated parents. For children with parents who did not graduate from high school, who had a semi-skilled or unskilled job and had fewer than 100 books in the home, just having 75 books in the home enabled these children to perform one-and-a-half grades better than their peers from bookless families.
