| Subject: DHS: Fighting Terrorism Abroad Is Encouraging More Attacks Within the U.S. Sun Nov 12, 2017 1:12 am | |
| In a terrorism advisory update issued Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) warns that U.S. success at combating terrorism overseas is actually encouraging more terror attacks within the U.S.
In its latest iteration of the bulletin on the terror threat to the U.S. homeland, DHS describes the ironic danger of successfully fighting terrorism abroad: - Quote :
- “As the United States steps up efforts to disrupt and defeat terrorist groups overseas, we will continue to face a multi-faceted threat environment.
“Specifically, continued successes aimed at disrupting and defeating terrorist groups overseas may encourage homegrown terrorists inside the United States to carry out acts of violence.” What’s more, homegrown terrorists are becoming harder to detect as they become more internet-savvy, the bulletin says: - Quote :
- “Homegrown terror suspects are increasingly relying on technology, such as end-to-end encrypted social media applications, to avoid detection.”
The bulletin says terrorists are encouraging new recruits to target public places and events with easy-to-use weapons, such as:
- Vehicles (to ram targets),
- Small guns,
- Straight-edged blades and knives, and
- Homemade explosives.
