A 44-year-old Perth man has been caught trying to take more than $180,000 in cash out of the country without declaring it, Australian customs says.

A customs spokesman says the man was stopped at Perth International Airport on Tuesday as he was preparing to leave Australia on a flight to Indonesia.

Despite declaring on his passenger card that he was not taking over $10,000 in cash out of Australia, a large plastic bag containing a large amount of cash was found hidden in a towel.

More cash was found concealed in Christmas presents and another large amount was found in the man's hand luggage, with the total adding up to $182,000, the spokesman said.

The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police, who seized the money and began their own investigation.

While there is no limit to the amount of currency that can be carried in or out of Australia, the declaration on amounts greater than $10,000 was imposed two years ago under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of two years jail, a fine of $55,000, or both.
