| Cook County commissioners on Wednesday finished the job and repealed the short-lived pop tax, but Board President Toni Preckwinkle suggested afterward that their work is just beginning.
Soda drinkers won’t have to pay the much-reviled tax come Dec. 1, which is also the day after the County Board’s deadline to come up with a new budget. That task is now more difficult without the $200 million Preckwinkle was counting on from the pop tax next year.
Following the 15-2 vote to repeal the pop tax, Preckwinkle told reporters she has no plans to present an alternate budget and that it’s up to commissioners to offer solutions, including any new tax or fee hikes.
