| Noting that a University of Wisconsin student-made video, showing police depicted as pigs and being beheaded, "has an intent to incite violence against police officers," Wisconsin State Senator Steve Nass said the university must hold the video-makers accountable. He added that the "vile and racist anti-police video" is hosted on UW-Madison's IT platform, which is supposed to be used for "legitimate academic purposes."
In the video, directed and produced by student Eneale Pickett, police officers are depicted wearing pig masks who hang a gagged black male with a U.S. flag tied into a noose. A woman wearing a U.S. flag blouse, a blindfold, and a scale in one hand, apparently depicting Lady Justice, seems to approve of the police action in the video.
After the man is hanged, several young people are shown on the ground with roses on their chests. Then a man chases the police into the woods and then emerges with a bloody pig head and a machete.
The image is similar to that of leftist comedian Kathy Griffin holding a severed head of President Donald Trump in a photo from May 30. The soundtrack on the UW-Madison student video is of President Trump speaking about the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Va. on Aug. 12. Several of the actors in the video are wearing shirts and hoodies designed by Pickett, who also runs a clothing line called Insert Apparel.
“This vile and racist anti-police video is clearly a direct threat to the brave men and women that serve behind the badge," said Sen. Steve Nass, a Republican, in a statement. "UW-Madison must immediately hold these students accountable and that should include an investigation by the local police and the Wisconsin Department of Justice."
In the statement, Nass notes that Pickett's video, "No Justice," is hosted and available on UW-Madison's IT platform, known as "UW-Madison Box."
"This platform is supposed to be used by faculty and students for legitimate academic purposes," reads the senator's statement. It would appear that the video violates the terms of use for this official UW-Madison IT platform."
“This racist video has an intent to incite violence against police officers," said Nass. "This can’t be condoned or ignored. UW-Madison must act swiftly and decisively against anyone on their campus that promotes hateful actions of this type." (It was reported late on Wednesday that the university had removed the video from its IT platform.)
According to ABC-12 WISN, Pickett told the school newspaper that the video "reflects his views on police brutality and racism" and that it is "also being used to promote his clothing line."
In a statement, University of Wisconson Vice Chancellor for Communications John Lucas said, "UW-Madison strives to provide a welcoming and inclusive campus environment, while allowing everyone to share ideas and political views in exercise of their free speech rights. However, the university strongly condemns the glorification of violence such as that contained in the promotion of a student-produced clothing line.
"We support our police partners, reject violence and violent imagery as tactics to achieve political objectives. All citizens have the rights to express political beliefs that others may find objectionable, or even counter to the values of the institution. The individual in this situation is engaging in a private business activity, unrelated to his status as a UW-Madison student. The clothing in question is not produced, nor endorsed by UW-Madison."
Senator Nass said, "If it were up to me, Steve Nass, I'd kick them out of school, tell them goodbye. You're wasting space for good students who want to obey the law and not incite violence."
